Five Important Tips for a Successful Store Launch on Amazon

April 26, 2018

You signed up to sell on Amazon and listed your first product. Smart. Now what?

1. Setup a sponsored ad

Even if you only spend $1/day, a sponsored ad will provide you valuable keyword data. When you run an ad, Amazon shares data with you related to what keywords people searched, how much the average click cost, your clicks for a certain keyword, and your amount of sales generated from a specific keyword. This data will help you understand what keywords are the most popular.

2. Everything you do impacts your on-page conversion rate

Organically ranking for keywords is the key to success on Amazon. Make sure everything you do on Amazon helps make your listing look better – video, pictures, descriptive text, bullet points, and reviews. The key is to include content that helps the consumer (and Amazon) understand your product better. Focus on what makes your product unique, or at least what makes it different from other products that have been on Amazon longer.

3. Reviews are really (really) important

Work hard to earn great reviews from the start. Once you have a high rating, it takes a lot of weaker reviews to impact a 5-star rating. Conversely, once you have a 3 star rating, it takes a lot of great reviews to fix it. Among our clients, we see 30% more sales from 4+ stars vs. 3.5 stars. We recommend you consider sending a free replacement to get a review changed.

4. Setup Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Yes, you make more money per unit drop-shipping than FBA, but you will struggle to rank for organically-searched keywords if you are not FBA. While Amazon factors in many variables when ranking products, nothing is more important than how much money Amazon makes from selling a product. And Amazon makes more money from FBA than from direct-to- consumer shipping from the vendor. A second reason that FBA is the way to go is that your product will qualify for free shipping via Amazon Prime, leading to a higher conversion rate.

5. Trademark your name

If you haven’t already trademarked your company and product names, you should. Once you that trademark, Amazon gives you special privileges including allowing you to design a brand page, set up headline ads, and add an Enhanced Brand Content (EBC) page. A brand page allows you to replace the boring Amazon list of your products with lifestyle photos showing everything you want (and excluding products you don’t). Headline ads are often at the top of search results. Since only more advanced sellers use them, there is often less competition and less cost-per- click. An EBC page is like neon lights highlighting your product.
